00100 COMPUTING REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHING AND COMPUTER SCIENCE RESEARCH
00200
00300
00400 Stanford University is now considering plans for the next
00500	generation of computers. The Computer Science Department wishes to
00600	state its requirements in this respect and also its opinion on what
00700	improvements in facilities are generally required for instructional
00800	computing.
00900
01000 The primary need is for effective interactive facilities in a
01100	wide variety of programming languages and also for interactive
01200	facilities that will permit some courses to be taught by computer.
01300	Present facilities are inadequate qualitatively and too expensive
01400	when used interactively. We are sure this is true for courses taught
01500	by the Computer Science Department and we believe it to be true for
01600	other departments using the computer for instructional purposes.
01700
01800 We hope that our needs can be met by the Computation Center,
01900	and we will be glad to help in trying to work out a suitable plan.
02000	If the Computation Center cannot work out a suitable plan, it will be
02100	necessary to have a separate facility for instructional work. We
02200	currently estimate that a facility with a capital cost of about
02300	$1,000,000 based on a Digital Equipment Corporation KI10 processor
02400	would meet these needs, but it might be more or less. If such a
02500	facility is necessary, then we hope the Administration and Trustees
02600	will keep this requirement in mind when they allocate funds for
02700	re-equipping the Computation Center.
